Brigit eligibility rules explained

Brigit says yes or no based on what it sees in your checking account. These are the exact tests it runs, the income types that pass, and the fixes when one check turns red.

The official eligibility requirements

Brigit publishes its criteria, which is unusual in this category. To request an Instant Cash advance you must:

  1. Be 18 or older and a U.S. citizen or resident with a valid SSN or ITIN.
  2. Link a primary checking account at a supported bank through Plaid.
  3. Have that account open for at least 60 days.
  4. Keep a balance above $0 — at the time of the request and typically the day after your payday.
  5. Show at least three recurring deposits from the same source (employer, government benefits, pension) on a regular cadence: weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly or monthly.
  6. Use the account actively enough that Brigit can model your spending — daily use is recommended.

Brigit summarizes these into a 0–100 Brigit Score and shows three status checks on the Instant Cash screen. All three must be green before the request button unlocks.

What counts as a recurring deposit

Income typeCounts?Notes
W-2 payroll direct depositYesThe ideal case: same employer, same cadence
Social Security, SSDI, VA, pensionYesFixed monthly deposits qualify
Unemployment benefitsUsuallyIf deposited electronically on a regular schedule
Gig apps (DoorDash, Uber, Instacart)Often noVarying amounts and dates aren't detected as recurring; weekly fixed payouts sometimes pass
Freelance / client invoicesUsually noIrregular timing fails the pattern test
Paper checks, ATM or cash depositsNoOnly electronic deposits count
Venmo / Cash App / Zelle transfersNoTreated as transfers, not income
Child support or alimonySometimesQualifies if paid electronically on a fixed schedule

If your income is irregular, the practical fix is to route all of it into one account on one day each week where your platform allows, and give Brigit two or three cycles to recognize the pattern.

Supported banks

Brigit connects to more than 15,000 U.S. financial institutions through Plaid, including Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, Capital One, U.S. Bank, PNC, Truist, TD, Navy Federal, USAA, most credit unions, and online banks such as Chime, Varo, SoFi, Ally, Current and Discover. A bank is "supported" when Plaid can both read transactions and verify the account for ACH. A handful of small banks and some prepaid programs allow read-only access, which is why a link can succeed but an advance still fails.

Chime, Varo and Current users: link the Chime/Varo/Current checking account, not the savings pocket, and make sure your direct deposit goes there. These accounts qualify — they are the most common banks among Brigit members.

Why people get denied (and how to fix it)

  • Wrong account linked. Joint, secondary, savings or a brand-new online account. Relink the one your pay hits.
  • Fewer than three qualifying deposits. New job or new account — wait one or two more paydays.
  • Negative balance after payday. If automatic bills drain the account below zero right after you're paid, Brigit assumes a repayment would bounce. Move one bill's date, or keep a small buffer.
  • Irregular income pattern. See the table above; consolidate deposits where possible.
  • Low activity. An account used only for a monthly transfer doesn't give Brigit enough signal. Use it for everyday spending.
  • Outstanding advance or returned payment. One advance at a time; a failed debit pauses new requests until it clears.
  • Bank sync issues. Plaid connections sometimes break after a password change. Reconnect in Settings → Linked accounts.

Each of these is covered in more depth, with what to do and how long to wait, in Brigit not approving you? 7 reasons and fixes.

How your limit is set

Passing eligibility gets you in; the Brigit Score sets how much you can borrow. The score weighs deposit size and consistency, average and minimum balance, how often you get close to zero, and your repayment history with Brigit. First advances are usually $50–$100, and Brigit's disclosed average across all members is about $72. Limits step up over several pay cycles rather than jumping; our limit guide shows what moves the number.

State restrictions

Instant Cash is offered in all 50 states. Maine caps advances at $250 under state rules. A few states have enacted earned-wage-access laws since 2024 (including Nevada, Missouri, Wisconsin, Kansas and South Carolina) that require registration and disclosures; these affect how Brigit discloses fees, not whether you can use it.

Personal loans $200–$5,000

Need more than $500?

Brigit caps advances at $500. Compare personal-loan offers from $200 to $5,000 — free, no obligation, and checking won't affect your credit score.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Brigit work with Chime?

Yes. Chime is one of the most common banks among Brigit members. Link your Chime Checking account (where your direct deposit lands), not the Savings account.

Can I use Brigit with Cash App or Venmo?

Cash App and Venmo balances generally don't qualify as a primary checking account, and transfers from them don't count as recurring income. Link the bank account your pay goes to instead.

I'm self-employed — can I qualify?

Sometimes. Brigit needs three deposits that look like a regular paycheck. Self-employed people who pay themselves a fixed amount on a fixed day from a business account often qualify; those with variable client payments usually don't.

Does Brigit check my credit score?

No. Eligibility and limits are based entirely on your bank activity. Advances are not reported to credit bureaus either.

How long after opening a bank account can I use Brigit?

The account must be at least 60 days old and show three recurring deposits, so realistically about two to three months for a new account with bi-weekly pay.
